Pascale Marthine Tayou: BOOMERANG: Serpentine Sackler Gallery

This exhibition is certainly an exuberant celebration of creativity, almost as jam-packed as an enthusiastic degree show. I question if quality control has been sacrificed in filling every space, wall and corner with varying stuff - the overall effect pulls down and dilutes the more meaningful ideas.

Transforming everyday objects, re-imagining available materials, inverting and subverting use: but alas, some pieces did not add a great deal and would hardly stand up by themselves. If the piece itself is the overall installation, again, this artist is prolific and full of the joys of recycling and reframing traditional crafts and materials from his native Cameroon, but they don't invite many layers of contemplation. If much of this exhibition is about putting such pieces in the context of the gallery, it's nothing to do with the provenance of the materials, but the process and rational behind the scenes.

I seem to be saying the same thing over again - much much less of this exhibition would have made a greater statement. It's enjoyable and clearly joyous work, but very diluted in a sea of stuff. Perhaps I just prefer to see ideas developed and developed again, rather than presented as a spread.
